Abstract

Abstract
Contemporary modern arts present us with all that is new, strange and unpredictable that we find ourselves in many occasions unable to determine to which type or classification of the arts does these works of art belong. Thus trying to understand or analyze such modern works that basically defy all boundaries between one type of art and the other, becomes a challenge.
Despite the fact that art classification was, and still is, a controversial matter, one that has occupied many philosophers, researchers and all those interested in art in general since ancient times and till today, the emergence of new digital technologies and all the works of art that took advantage of them, presented them all with a whole new challenge that was not, to a great extent, foreseeable.
The research presumes that modern art classifications are incapable of encompassing this huge number of modern digital art works that not only vary greatly, but also intermingle with other contemporary forms of art. It inspects in a historical study the origin of different classifications, with a focus on painting, in an attempt to understand where new digital art works really belong in the contemporary art scene, and the effect of such classifications on understanding and analyzing all sorts of contemporary digital works of art.
Changing of the art scene with the introduction of new digital technologies, disappearance of borderlines between all sorts of artistic creation, limitations of modern classifications to establish a clear framework that encompasses such new digital artworks as well as the need to put in place a new objective classification that represents contemporary forms of art, are some of the research's conclusions.
