Abstract

Our Egyptian civilization is characterized by its rich heritage, despite that, Most of furniture designs lack the Egyptian identity, This is due to reasons including the reluctance of some furniture designers to use the vocabulary of heritage in their works for fear of the difficulty of formulating it in a contemporary way, or because the contemporary trend dominates the general design thought. Hence the research problem, What are the ways and approaches through which the Egyptian furniture designer can employ the vocabulary of heritage in his work to produce contemporary furniture designs with an Egyptian identity? The study assumes that the ways of inspiration from heritage are represented in three approaches that would contribute to the revival of heritage in furniture designs in a contemporary way, as follows: The first is the explicit revitalization approach to traditional designs by imitating old formations and transferring them as they are often from their external appearance, and this approach relies on simulation and direct quotation from the source of inspiration, The second is the eclectic approach that deals with heritage on the basis that it is a source of vocabulary formulations and spatial fine relations, as it borrows these vocabularies and tries to formulate them within contemporary design production, This approach relies on abstraction and indirect quotation from the source of inspiration. The third approach is the analytical approach that attempts to reformulate vocabulary and visual or functional fine concepts of heritage in a modern way that is compatible with the spirit of the times with the conscious application of modern technology. This approach relies on creative thought and modification in the source of inspiration, and here the reference to heritage is a conceptual reference and not a superficial formal reference. The research aims to monitor and analyze some pieces of furniture as examples of the approaches used by designers in employing heritage to produce contemporary furniture with an Egyptian identity and to identify the approaches for inspiration from the heritage that help in designing furniture with an Egyptian identity. The research concluded that the approaches could be followed separately or combined with more than one entrance to revive the heritage in contemporary pieces of furniture.
