Abstract

Abstract
The modification phenomenon on the construction and finish of public housing units is widely spread among Kuwaiti end user families. The purpose of this study is to investigate (1 the main modification changes in the interiors and exteriors of the housing units, 2) the main reasons for those modifications, 3) the paid budgets for making modifications and changes. A quantitative research method was employed, through an online survey, in this study. One thousand and five hundred and sixty (n=1560) public household members participated in the study. The study found many reasons caused the modifications, which are increasing the number of family members, preferring to change the interior décor, married son/ daughter willing to live with parents, changing the exterior façade of governmental housing respectively. The main modifications occurred were changing the exterior façade, exterior doors, installing carport, combining two rooms together, changing lighting fixtures, painting entire unite, installing window curtains. This paper provides suggestions and practical implication for the policy maker, the Public Authority for Housing Welfare, interior designers and architects to better design and construct future public housing in Kuwait.
